Collection of the Institute of Near Eastern Archaeology

The collection of the Institute of Near Eastern Archaeology comprises several hundred finds and serves both as an exhibition and as a collection for teaching purposes. It is of heterogeneous character.

The exhibits stem from various find spots in the Near East (Ancient Mesopotamia with its modern states of Iraq and Syria, as well as Turkey and Iran). They found their way to Munich through the participation of our institute in excavations and research projects on the one hand, and through donations on the other. The objects form an essential part of our didactic concept and constitute the basis for a practically-oriented education of our students.

The collection consists of pottery, replicae of figural insigniae and figurines, as well as of numerous impressions of both cylinder and stamp seals. The private collection of Helene Plagemann-Kleiss was donated to our institute. It includes stone vessels and objects from Iran, as well as pottery from various epochs. The estate of Barthel Hrouda contributes a wide collection of slides from his expeditionss to various states in the Near East. Other small groups of objects were donations from private persons, who had either brought them from their own travels or had inherited them.
